Getting your PPS number
Your Personal Public Service Number is required for work, banking, and accessing public services. Here's how to get one.
A PPS number (Personal Public Service number) is Ireland's identifier for tax, work and public services, and you apply for it free of charge through MyWelfare.ie. You cannot be charged for one, and most people receive theirs by post within a few weeks of their appointment or online application.
Do I need one? Yes, for almost everything official: starting a job (your employer needs it for payroll tax), registering with Revenue, applying for a medical card or GP visit card, and many banking and housing steps. You do not need one just to look for work or to view rentals.
How do I apply? Through MyWelfare.ie, the Department of Social Protection's portal. You will need photo ID (passport or national identity card), proof of your address in Ireland (a letter or bill with your name and address), and evidence of why you need the number, such as a job offer letter. If you cannot complete it online, you can book an in-person appointment at a PPS Registration Centre through the same site.
How long does it take? Processing times vary, but a few weeks from application to the letter arriving is typical. Start early: it is usually the first document a new employer asks for, and other registrations queue behind it.
What if my address situation is complicated? A letter from a hostel, host family or landlord confirming you stay there generally works as proof of address. Citizens Information has a full list of acceptable documents.
One caution: nobody legitimate will ever sell you a PPS number or charge to "fast-track" it. The only channel is MyWelfare.ie.
