Equality Statement

Homjo is built for newcomers to Ireland — people who are disproportionately on the receiving end of discrimination in housing and services. Non-discrimination is not a compliance afterthought here; it is designed into how posting works.

The rules

The Irish Equal Status Acts 2000–2018 prohibit discrimination in the provision of goods, services and accommodation on these protected grounds: gender, civil status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race (including colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin), and membership of the Traveller community — and, for accommodation, the housing assistance ground (refusing tenants because they receive HAP, rent supplement or other social welfare payments).

On Homjo this means listings, requests and messages must not exclude or disfavour people on any of these grounds. Classic examples that are not allowed:

  • "No HAP" / "professionals only" / "working tenants only" in accommodation ads
  • "No [nationality]" or "[nationality] only" — in any language
  • Excluding families with children, older or younger adults, or disabled people from housing or services

How we enforce it

  • Every listing is screened before it goes live, not after a complaint. The core discrimination phrases — housing-assistance refusals, nationality and ethnicity exclusions, family and age exclusions, and their local equivalents — are screened in all 13 languages Homjo ships in, including Irish. Some combined patterns (for example a religion or nationality joined to a job title) are screened in English only, and AI-assisted review covers every language for wording the fixed lists miss. Unambiguous violations are blocked; borderline phrasing gets AI-assisted review with human oversight.
  • Screening covers the housing-assistance proxies common in Irish ads ("no rent allowance", "keine HAP", and their equivalents in other languages), not just the English phrases.
  • Live listings are re-checked automatically every three days, so a phrase that got through is caught later.
  • Paid placement changes nothing: boosted listings go through exactly the same screening.
  • Search and browse ordering never use protected characteristics — see How Listings Are Ranked. Connect profiles show the age and gender a person chose to add to their own profile; Homjo's search tools, including the Match Scout assistant, do not filter people by them.

No filter is perfect, and some lawful preferences exist in narrow cases. The Acts allow a person letting a room in shared accommodation to state a gender preference. On Homjo that preference exists only as a structured field on Flatmate/Sharing and Digs listings — never on a whole-property let — and a gender phrase typed into any listing's text produces a warning and a review rather than a block. Where automation gets it wrong in either direction, a human decides on appeal.
